Supporters of Nicaragua's ruling party Sunday attacked the caravan of the opposition leader Eduardo Montealegr, who was heading a protest march in the western province of Leon.
Rejecting the results of the municipal elections on Nov. 9, the opposition Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC) Sunday staged a march in Leon province, 93 km northwest of the capital Managua. The demonstrators clashed with the supporters of the ruling party Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), who threw mortars, stones and bludgeons to Montealegre's caravan.
Alvaro Salas, the prosecutor of the sixth districts of Managua from the PLC, was injured. AK-47 rifles were allegedly heard fired.
Montealegr criticized that unknown people aboard an ambulance shot at persons accompanied him.
Transito Tellez, Leon's governor from the FSLN, said the supporters of the Nicaraguan government were celebrating the electoral triumph and repelled the march.
During the elections, the FSLN won 103 municipalities of the 146 in dispute. The PLC, which won 39 municipalities, said that there were electoral frauds in Managua, Leon and other regions of the country, where the opposition does not accept the defeat.
