Peru and South Korea will announce the start of negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) during South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's stay in Peru, Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia said Thursday.

Lee Myung-bak arrived in Lima, the Peruvian capital, on Thursday for an official visit to the South American country and the leaders' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Lee and Peruvian President Alan Garcia are expected to jointly announce the launching of the negotiations on Friday, the minister said.

Peru has signed FTAs with Canada, Singapore, the United States and Thailand, all of them APEC member economies. The country concluded talks on an FTA with China on Wednesday.
