Leaders from the 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on Sunday pledged further efforts to enhance human security, combat terrorism and secure regional trade.

"Enhancing human security and protecting the region's business and trade against natural, accident or deliberate disruptions remains an enduring priority for APEC," the leaders said in a declaration issued after a two-day summit in the Peruvian capital Lima.

The leaders condemned all terrorist acts as criminal and unjustifiable. "Terrorism in all forms and manifestations, committed by whomever, wherever and for whatever purposes, is a profound threat to the peace and security of all people and of all faiths, " said the document. "Terrorist acts can not be excused or justified by any alleged cause, conflict, oppression, or poverty," it said.

The leaders pledged full cooperation to ensure secure flow of people, goods and investments from disruption caused by terrorist acts. They urged continued efforts to help secure the region's economic, trade, investment and financial system from terrorist attack or abuse and trade-based money laundering.

They also welcomed the ongoing efforts of the international community to combat piracy and armed robbery at sea and encouraged further concerted efforts to fight against piracy.

Nineteen leaders from the APEC member economies attended the two-day summit, part of the APEC Leaders' Week in Lima on Nov. 16-23.

Established in 1989, APEC groups Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
