New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is set to be named commerce secretary by U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, pending a formal announcement, American media said Monday.
Obama planned to announce the nomination after Thanksgiving (Nov. 27), Politico quoted Democratic sources as saying.
Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez told Fox News that Richardson will be a good successor.
He said Richardson "has a sense for how important trade is, how much trade is part of a foreign policy strategy, the fact that it does lead to better relations with countries all over the world."
Richardson had wanted to be secretary of state, but Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is scheduled to be tapped for that job after Thanksgiving.
