Leader of Canada's biggest opposition group Liberal Party Stephane Dion will become interim Prime Minister if the current Conservative government is brought down, party officials said Monday.
The Liberals and the New Democratic Party (NDP) have finalized on the details of a coalition government to replace Stephen Harper's government, which they are planning to bring down next week. The Bloc Quebecois will support the coalition from out in the parliament.
The House of Commons is scheduled to vote in a non-confidence motion tabled by the Liberals next Monday. If that happens, the government will fall. The governor general will then ask the oppositions to form a coalition.
The crisis was sparked after the Conservatives unveiled their economic update last Thursday, which the oppositions have denounced as having no economic stimulus package at a time of economic difficulty. But they were particularly angered by the government plan to slash public funding for all political parties, which would affect the oppositions much seriously than the conservatives.
The three oppositions claimed that the government has lost their confidence in that it failed to act effectively to save the country's economy amid the current global economic crisis.
Earlier Monday, opposition officials said the Liberals and NDP have finalized their negotiations on forming the coalition government, which would comprise 18 Liberal ministers and six NDP ministers.
The Bloc Quebecois has agreed to support the coalition for at least 30 months.
The three oppositions control 163 seats, more than the 143 of Conservatives.
The Conservatives, who first came to power in 2006, were elected to a stronger minority government just in October.
