The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) ambushed a group of police officers in a region bordering Venezuela on Friday, killing at least eight, authorities said.
The officers were attacked by FARC rebels while on their way to a local cemetery to identify a corpse, said a police spokesman from the bordering city of Fortul.
Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santo condemned the action as a "cowardly terrorist attack."
Jorge Munoz, mayor of the Fortul municipality, also denounced the rebels for murdering defenseless people. He urged the government to step up efforts to combat the insurgents.
