A top Canadian diplomat has been kidnapped by a rebel group in Niger, Canadian media reported Tuesday.
The rebel group, the Front des Forces de Redressement (FFR), said it has kidnapped four people, including UN special envoy Robert Fowler, during a commando operation in Niger's western region of Tillabery on Monday, said the reports, citing a statement on the rebel group's website.
Fowler was traveling with his Canadian aid and their driver from Niger. All were reported missing Monday.
But the statement has not been confirmed by the UN officials, who said the UN is actively working with the officials of Niger to locate the missing men.
Fowler, 64, was appointed as UN special envoy to Niger last July. He arrived in the country several days ago for talks with the government and non-governmental officials.
