A gondola tower at the base of a mountain in western Canada came off its moorings Tuesday, trapping at least a dozen passengers inside several cars, news reports said.

Three people were already sent to hospital. Police say there does not appear to be any danger of the gondola support falling farther. Crews are working out a plan to extricate the people stuck inside.

The accident happened in the city of Whistler in the province of British Columbia.
