The United States will provide the Democratic Republic of Congo and its neighboring countries with six million dollars in aid for refugees and the displaced people in the country, the White House said Thursday.
In his memo released by the White House, President George W. Bush ordered the emergency humanitarian relief not only to DR Congo, but also to the people suffering in turmoil in Rwanda and Uganda.
"Specifically, these funds will be used to provide emergency relief commodities like blankets, water buckets, mosquito nets, and kitchen sets; register and relocate people that have been displaced; and address humanitarian protection needs, including for children and women who have been victims of sexual violence," according to a White House official.
Some 250,000 people have been displaced in the eastern DR Congodue to intensified fighting between government troops and rebel militia.
