Brazilian government Wednesday regretted the death of Guinean President General Lansana Conte, who passed away Monday due to a chronic illness, and called for a peaceful power transition.
Brazilian government would like to extend its deep and sincere condolences to the family of President Conte, the Guinean government and people, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Brazil hopes to see a peaceful and democratic power transition in Guinea, it said.
Conte, 74, had been leading the western African country since 1984. He was elected president in 1993 and reelected in 1998 and 2003.
According to local media reports, mutinous army officers Tuesday announced the suspension of the constitution and the government following Conte's death.
According to Guinea's constitution, the head of the National Assembly should assume the leadership and summon an election in 60days in the event of the president's death. Source:Xinhua
