Rescuers are searching for eight snowmobilers Monday after an avalanche buried them in the deep snow in a mountain in western Canada, officials and police said.
A total of 11 were buried under the snow when the accident happened late Sunday night near the city of Fernie in British Columbia province, but three of them managed to dig themselves out, reports reaching here said.
They were sighted by a helicopter after reports of an avalanche in that area and sent to hospital. Two have been discharged and the third remains in hospital in stable condition.
Fernie is located on the border of Alberta province, about 300 kilometers southwest of Calgary.
Rescuers flew over the avalanche site and dropped handheld avalanche bombs onto the slope to stabilize it and prevent further avalanche activity at first light on Monday morning, according to a press release from Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Volunteer searchers are also at the sight to help.
It remains unclear whether any of the missing snowmobilers are still alive, but officials said chances of survival are slim.
