An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked Costa Rica on Thursday afternoon, mainly affecting the cities of San Jose and Alajuela.
By press time, there has been no report of casualties, but slight damages such as broken windows were caused to high buildings in San Jose, Alajuela and Heredia, which are the closest cities to the earthquake zone.
According to the Vulcanology and Seismology Observatory of the National University (Ovsicori), the epicenter was some 6 km east of the Poas Volcano, and 25 km northwest of San Jose, with a depth of 30 km.
Ovsicori spokeswoman Floribeth Vega said that the earthquake was caused by a geological fault, adding that a magnitude-4 earthquake took place in the same zone on Wednesday morning.
According to reports of the local media, the earthquake was felt strongly in the central, northern and Atlantic zones of the country, and slightly in the North Pacific region.
Cell phone communications and power supply in quite a few communities were cut off temporarily, but were reported to be resuming gradually.
At least seven strong aftershocks were felt or reported, after the first tremor hit at around 1:23 p.m. local time.
