U.S. President-elect Barack Obama said here on Monday that his administration will beef up relations with Mexico when he met with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

During the meeting, which focused on border security and economic cooperation, Obama expressed belief that U.S.-Mexico relations, which have been strong, can become stronger.

New U.S. presidents traditionally meet with their Mexican counterparts either before they are inaugurated or shortly afterward. Obama will be inaugurated on January 20.

Calderon is scheduled to meet outgoing U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday. He is also expected to meet leaders of the Democratically controlled U.S. Congress, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
