A helicopter crash Monday on the Texas A&M University campus killed one person and injured four others aboard, authorities said.

The aircraft went down in an open field next to a dining hall soon after takeoff from a nearby location at the College Station, Texas, campus, said university spokesman Tom Hughes.

All of the injured have been hospitalized and their conditions were not immediately known.

Students are on winter break, with classes set to resume Jan. 20.

The helicopter was participating in a military exercise on campus and none of the five on board was a student.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
