A downtown metro station was closed Tuesday after a 68-year-old woman fell onto the subway tracks at the station in Washington, metro officials said.

The station closed was Gallery Place station on the Red Line, officials said. The incident happened shortly before 9:30 a.m, but it's not clear whether crowding on the platforms is to blame for the person falling.

The woman has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The closure forced people to walk further to reach the National Mall.
