The center-south zone of Chile has been affected by 32 forest fires, with 28 of them under control, the National Office of Emergencies (Onemi) said on Friday.

Onemi will maintain the red fire alert for the localities of Lumaco and Los Sauces in the province of Malleco and the yellow alert for most other localities in the province.

In the Los Rios region no new fires were reported on Friday. However, 17 were under control and the yellow alert was in force.

Onemi said the Rancagua region, a few kilometers from Santiago, was now not under the threat of fires, so early the warning alert had been lifted.

In the Maule region, near Rancagua, two new fires were reported, and it remains under the yellow alert.

In the Bio Bio region, one new fire was reported, while in the Araucania region one new fire was reported and seven under control. Both remain under the yellow alert.

A total of 6,776.54 hectares of land have been affected by the fires.
