The Fifth Summit of the Americas will be held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on April 17-19, 2009.
The summit's theme is "Securing Our Citizens' Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability."
The Summits of the Americas are periodic meetings that bring together the 34 heads of state and government of the Americas to discuss and make decisions on issues of relevance for the region.
Four Summits plus two Special Summits of the Americas have taken place.
The First Summit was held in Miami, the United States in 1994, and helped forge a renewed commitment and partnership based on democracy, economic integration, and sustainable development.
The Special Summit on Sustainable Development in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia in 1996 established a common vision for the future according to the concepts of sustainable development, including health and education, sustainable agriculture and forestry, sustainable cities and communities, water resources and coastal areas, and energy and minerals.
The Second Summit took place in Santiago, Chile in 1998 and focused on education, emphasizing its central importance in increasing social justice, economic integration, and political dialogue.
The Third Summit in Quebec City, Canada in 2001 focused on democracy and human rights initiatives as a means by which to create prosperity, and highlighted the role of technology.
The Second Special Summit, held in Monterrey, Mexico in 2004, highlighted initiatives for promoting sustainable economic growth with an emphasis on increased distribution of wealth and social development.
The Fourth Summit took place in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 2005 and promoted increased job creation to fight poverty and strengthen democratic governance.
