A debt-ridden Belgian property developer kidnapped his bank manager at gunpoint in southern Spain and demanded a loan of 50 000 euros (65 500 dollars), police said.
The man had previously been refused loans for lack of guarantees. He approached the manager in a parking lot near the bank on Tuesday, police said Friday.
The man, who lives in Marbella, pointed a pistol at the manager and warned him that hired killers would hurt his family if he did not arrange loan for him and give him his car.
The bank manager then telephoned the bank, purportedly to make arrangements for the loan, but used coded language to alert authorities at the bank of the situation.
Police were then informed and seized the kidnapper as they left the building.
The builder was remanded in custody on Thursday.
