Newspaper websites in the Unites States continue to attract an ever-growing readership, with the average number of unique visitors up 10 percent in the first quarter this year, according to a study released Thursday.

Websites operated by American newspapers attracted more than 73.3 million monthly unique users in the three months ended March 31,compared with 66.4 million in the same period last year, said the study conducted by market research firm Nielsen Online and commissioned by the Newspaper Association of America.

Online newspaper readers generated an average of more than 3.5 billion page views per month in the first quarter this year, an increase of 13 percent over the same period last year. The number is the highest since the NAA started keeping track of the data in 2004.

However, newspapers, which have been seeing sharp losses in advertisement sales in their print versions, has a challenging job to keep their online advertising revenues increasing in line with the growing digital readership.

Industry analysts said that advertisers are still not willing to pay a premium for high-quality online content provided by traditional newspapers, especially as the economy is in a deep recession.

Losses in advertisement revenues have forced a numbers of newspapers in the United States to shut down, or stop print operations and only focus on online versions in recent months.
