Honduras' post-coup government, led by Roberto Micheletti, on Tuesday extended the curfew for 72 hours on Tuesday, Micheletti's spokesman told reporters.

The curfew will end on Friday morning, said Rene Zepeda Flores.

Micheletti's government had declared a curfew on Sunday and Monday nights from 9:00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. local time (0300 GMT to 1200 GMT) immediately after the coup that deposed President Manuel Zelaya.

The congress appointed Micheletti as president in a session that began with the reading of a resignation letter purportedly from Zelaya, but denouced as fake by the ousted leader.

Hooded and heavily armed Honduran soldiers had seized Zelaya from his bed in the Presidential Palace in early hours on Sunday morning, and forced him to board a plane to Costa Rica.

Zelaya's supporters continue to protest the coup outside Tegucigalpa's Palace of Government, in defiance of the curfew. On Monday, two people died in separate incidents protesting against the new government.

Many of the world's leaders have spoken out against the coup and Honduras' neighbors have halted cross-border trade with it.
