Chile's Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez cheered Wednesday the resolution adopted by the Organization of American
States (OAS) demanding that Honduras' president, who was forced into exile on Sunday, be reinstated.
"This constitutes a clear demonstration that there is no room for military coups which interrupt the functioning of democratic institutions," the minister told media.
The OAS will suspend Honduras unless the government returns the presidency to Manuel Zelaya, who was seized from his bed at the presidential residence early Sunday by hundreds of heavily armed and hooded soldiers and forced to board a plane to Costa Rica.
The OAS measure is "very tough because it prevents Honduras from taking part in any hemisphere-wide organizations, including those of a financial nature and those that lend support to development," Fernandez said.
The OAS measure came after multiple nations have ordered the withdrawal of their ambassadors from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa either permanently or for consultations, a step before the permanent withdrawal.
The OAS resolution instructs Jose Miguel Insulza, the body's secretary general, to led a mission to negotiate Zelaya's return within 72 hours.
Earlier reports said that Zelaya has announced his delay of planned return on Thursday to let in more room for the negotiation by the deadline.
