Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya's surprise return Monday was made possible with help from certain sectors of the armed forces, the country's ambassador to Panama, Juan Alfaro Posadas, said here Thursday.
A sector of the Honduran armed forces begins to shift their loyalty to Zelaya, who appeared in Brazilian embassy in Honduras Monday, the ambassador told a press conference.
"They are young officers, captains, mayors and lieutenant colonels, who have supported president Zelaya," said Alfaro.
Zelaya's delegation was able to enter Honduras with the collaboration of these sectors from the armed forces who support his restitution in power, he said.
Alfaro participated on Thursday in a meeting with Panamanian nongovernmental organizations that supports Zelaya. Among them is the Movements of the United Peoples for our Americas (MPUNA).
MPUNA coordinator, Miguel A. Candanedo said Panama pleads for the dialogue and respect to the institutionalism of the Honduran democracy framed in the proposal of Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.
"We support the restoration of the democracy in Honduras and we have clearly said that the Hondurans have the right to decide their destiny respecting the results of the elections which took Zelaya to power," Candanedo said.
Candanedo added that Zelaya's return to Honduras must give an agreed and definite solution to solve this political crisis with the support of the international community.
Zelaya was ousted on June 28 and taken by force to Costa Rica. His previous efforts to return had failed.
