Ibero-American General Secretary Enrique Iglesias said Wednesday that Latin America could contribute more to globalization and praised Portugal for its increased interest in Latin America.

"The countries with cultural and language affinity can contribute more and better to globalization and participate in a more active form in the international community," Iglesias said at a luncheon organized by the Portuguese-Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Industry to prepare for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit scheduled for Nov. 30 to Dec. 1 in Lisbon.

Iglesias talked about the challenges of the world economy and the role of Latin America.

Latin America had done a better job of dealing with the crisis than other regions in the world thanks to "the solidity of its bank system" and the "reduction of its international debt," Iglesias said.

According to him, Latin America could assume an important role as a leading food producer in the future. "It is a historical opportunity to develop an intelligent economy," he explained.

The Ibero-American Summit is an annual meeting. It is organized by the Ibero-American Community of Nations as well as by leaders of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking nations in Europe and the Americas.
