Peru and the European Union (EU) signed an memorandum of understanding on Thursday to establish a mechanism of bilateral consultations, Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde said.

The document was signed in Brussels by Garcia Belaunde and EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, according to news reports reaching here.

It proved the good state of bilateral ties between Peru and the European bloc, Garcia Belaunde said.

He said the statement covered issues of common concern, including climate change and the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism.

It also boosted negotiations on a free trade agreement between Peru and the EU, he said, adding that he believed the negotiations would wrap up by the end of this year.
