Visiting Dominican Economy Minister Temistocles Montas on Friday asked Mexico to help Dominica explore its oil and gas resources to reduce its heavy oil imports.

Montas said at the Ibero-American Conversation, an event organized by the Ibero-American Organization, that Dominica would like help from both Mexican state-run oil giant Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and Mexican private companies.

"Our idea is to reach an agreement with Mexican authorities," he explained. "We would view with interest that Pemex, or any other Mexican firms, that could help our nation develop gas and oil search policy."

He said some international private companies had unsuccessfully searched for oil in the Dominican Republic, so the nation decided to seek help from state firms instead. Dominica also initiated a new renewable energy law that had attracted interest from Spanish and German companies, he added.

In 2008, Dominica imported 4.5 billion U.S. dollars worth of oil.
