Nine survivors of a plane crash in Brazil's Amazon rainforest have been discharged from hospital and returned to their homes, the air force said on Saturday.

The military plane, carrying four crew members and seven health officials, went missing on Thursday during a flight from Cruzeiro do Sul, in northwestern Acre state, to the Amazonas town of Tabatinga, which borders Colombia and Peru.

The passengers were undertaking an immunization campaign in indigenous communities, said a spokesman for the National Health Foundation (FUNASA) in Cruzeiro do Sul.

According to the survivors, the plane stopped in mid-air and the pilot plunged the plane into the Itui river in the far western Amazon region.

The Brazilian Air Force said that divers continued to search the river for two missing people.

It was still unclear what caused the crash.
