Brazilian police probe links between Amazon Indians, Colombian rebels

The Brazilian Federal Police were investigating the possible links between an armed group made up of Brazilian Indians and inhabitants of the Amazon region and Colombia rebel forces, local newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported on Monday.
The group, composed of 1,500 volunteers equipped with wooden batons and rifles, is allegedly a native police force aimed to prevent crimes in the region where the protection by Federal Police is unavailable.
The group also said it took combating alcohol and drug trafficking in the region as part of its missions.
There were earlier media reports that the Federal Police suspected the group is a militia that receives training from the Revolutionary Armed forces of Colombia (FARC), the largest rebel group in Colombia.
