Ecuador hailed the upcoming Union of the South American Nations (Unasur) Extraordinary Summit as "an important milestone" for the union to aid quake-torn Haiti, Security Minister Miguel Carvajal said Monday.
Reconstruction work in Haiti will be the only focus of the Unasur summit, which is to open on Tuesday in Ecuador's capital city Quito.
Leaders of the member countries were expected to coordinate actions in the summit to send humanitarian aid to Haiti and manage the fallout from natural disaster, Carvajal said.
The 7.3-magnitude earthquake on Jan. 12 hit hard on Haiti which was troubled by a series of social, economic and political problems, he said, adding the Unasur, with Ecuador being the rotating president, has been quick in response.
