The Mexican Prosecutor's Office said Thursday that the United States handed over 20 Mexican prisoners to Mexico in recent days to let them serve out sentences in their home country.

Meanwhile, Mexico sent to the United States 15 U.S. prisoners for the same purpose.

The Office said in a statement that the 15 U.S. prisoners were delivered between March 8 and 10 to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisoners under the Justice Department.

The aim of the transfer is "to help the readjustment process of the prisoners who committed crimes in other countries, so they can complete their sentences near their families," the Office said.

The transfer complied with a bilateral agreement on the fulfilment of penal sentences.

This was the 129th prisoner transfer between the Mexican and U.S. governments, the Office said.
