U.S. federal agents and police detectives arrested a Connecticut man of Pakistani descent Monday night in connection with a failed car bomb plot in New York's Times Square, officials said.

The suspect, who had lived in the state of Connecticut, was arrested upon departure at the JFK airport in New York. He was trying to leave the country.

The suspect was believed to be the one who recently bought the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder SUV that was found loaded with gasoline, propane, fireworks and fertilizer in the center of the square on Saturday, official sources were quoted by the New York Times as saying.

Authorities identified the man after tracking records of the vehicle back to its previous owner in Bridgeport, Connecticut, who had advertised it for sale on several websites.

The suspect bought the vehicle with cash, and the sale was handled without any formal paperwork.
