Two people were killed and two others -- a mother and her 18-month-old daughter -- were injured Friday morning when a Chicago-bound passenger train struck a car that went around gates at a crossing in Gary in northwest Indiana State of the United States, officials said.
The South Shore train hit the car near County Line Road and Dunes Highway in northwest Indiana at about 9:15 a.m., police said. The car went around the crossing gates and in front of the train.
There were two fatalities and two injuries in the automobile, police said.
Killed were the driver of the car, 20, of East Chicago, Ind. and a backseat passenger, 19-year-old, of Merrillville, Ind., said Gary Police.
The two survivors were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
The car, a Ford Escort, was headed south on County Line Road and had waited at the crossing for an eastbound freight train to pass, police said. Once it passed, the Escort went around the gates and was hit by the westbound South Shore Line train.
No one aboard the train was hurt. It was carrying 500 passengers at the time, police said.
Local police were investigating.
