A spokesman for the Azerbaijan National Security Ministry said Monday that his country has prevented a terrorist plot which targets foreign embassies in the Caucasus nation, according to reports reaching Moscow.

The alleged terrorist group was discovered Saturday, when one of its members was killed and several others arrested in a village, Interfax news agency quoted Arif Babayev as saying.

"Intensive detective and search operations are under way to catch the other members of the group," he said.

One of the group's members was an Azeri army officer, Senior Lt. Kyamran Asadov, who was accused of stealing four rifles, one portable machine gun, 20 grenades, a large number of cartridges and other accessories from his unit, Arif said.

The U.S. and British embassies have suspended their visa service due to the alert.
