Russia condemned the fuel and electricity cuts in the Gaza Strip, alleging it will undermine the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

Isolation and revenge, which will affect the daily life of the Palestinians, were hardly effective by means of fighting extremism, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said.

"These steps on the part of Israel clash with the current political dialogue between Mahmoud Abbas and Ehud Olmer," Interfaxnews agency quoted him as saying.

On Sunday, Israel began cutting vital fuel shipments to the Gaza Strip, which was designated as a "hostile territory" by the Israeli authorities in September, after Hamas, which opposes the creation of the state of Israel, won control of the area following months of clashes with its Fatah rival.

According to keen observers, the Israeli move is aimed at pressuring the Hamas group to clamp down on militants, who have been firing rockets into parts of Israel from the area.
