The security situation is generally stable in Macedonia, but there are still some challenges to be cautious of, the country's national security council made the conclusion at a session held on Wednesday, news reaching here from Skopje reported.

The meeting was called to discuss the security situation in Macedonia against the background of the killing of a policeman this month, the row over the use of the Albanian flag in the country, and the ongoing negotiations on neighboring Kosovo's status.

President Branko Crvenkovski, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Parliament Speaker Ljubisha Georgievski as well as the Ministers of Foreign and Internal Affairs, Antonio Milososki and Gordana Jankuloska attended the meeting.

The meeting said the recent incident in which one Macedonian police officer was killed "was caused by criminal groups and individuals", calling for the police to "stay vigilant", and not to "underestimate the criminal groups" operating in Macedonia.
