The Czech foreigner and border police will be re-organized by January 1, 2008 in connection with the Czech Republic's entry to the Schengen system at the end of this year, Pavel Vosicky from the Plzen foreigner police said on Friday.
Some 43 foreigner police inspectorates will be established by January 1, 2008 to replace the current 195 branches, the Czech news agency CTK quoted Vosicky as saying.
The main task of the newly established inspectorates will be fighting against illegal migration. Its members will check housing facilities for foreigners and make decisions on issuing visas and residence permits, Vosicky said.
They will organize random security operations in certain border areas and will rely on close cooperation with the German side, he said.
The seven regional foreign police offices will continue to function, according to Vosicky.
The former foreigner and border police will be able to join the traffic and street police in the border regions, he added.
The Czech foreigner and border police had 7,197 members by January 1, 2005. By the end of this year, their number will be reduced by 2,329.
The checks on the internal borders between the new and old EU countries will be lifted with the extension of the Schengen system at the end of the year.
All nine new EU members, including the Czech Republic, are ready to introduce the Schengen system at their land borders by Dec. 21 and international airports by the end of next March.
