It would be difficult for Russia to continue dialogue with NATO if Washington deployed a missile defense system in Europe in accordance with its own plans, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Friday.
"If a missile defense system in Europe is tailored only to the United States' unilateral plans, it will be hard for us to continue the Russia-NATO dialogue," Lavrov told reporters after a NATO-Russia Council meeting.
"I absolutely do not think that this strengthens our political stability," he added, saying that it would jeopardize Russia-NATO cooperation in missile defense.
The U.S. wants to deploy a radar in the Czech Republic and a missile defense base in Poland.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told a press conference after the meeting of the NATO-Russia Council that the United States has reaffirmed its determination to seek to iron out differences with Russia over the missile plans "in a constructive way." Source: Xinhua
