Four of five British residents currently held at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo in Cuba will be released, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) said Friday.
The release was a result of British negotiations with Washington after British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made a request in July. The five people had lived in Britain for some time.
The BBC report said three men were to be returned to Britain, one to Saudi Arabia. The fifth will remain in detention at the controversial prison camp.
An announcement was expected within weeks, it said.
Britain's Foreign Office refused to confirm the report, but said negotiations were ongoing. "We are not going to speculate or comment on where the discussions that we are having with the Americans have got to," a spokesman said.
"We considered the circumstances of each case with the United States," he said, adding that it is a complex issue and the foreign office will not give a step-by-step account of where this process is. Source: Xinhua
