The Dutch government said on Friday that it has agreed to host a tribunal in the Netherlands for the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri.
"The Netherlands will be making a practical contribution to the promotion of the international rule of law and the fight against terrorism and impunity, and strengthening our position as a base for international organizations," said Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen in a statement.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sent a letter to Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende in the summer, asking him to consider hosting the Hariri tribunal in the Netherlands.
The Dutch government will pay the tribunal's rent for six years. Lebanon will pay 49 percent of the tribunal's expenses. The remaining 51 percent will be paid from voluntary contributions by U.N. member states, said the Dutch government.
