The European Commission on Friday proposed the introduction of "Euro VI" standard for heavy vehicles to significantly reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.
The new standard would cut emissions of the two substances by 80 percent and 66 percent respectively compared with the "Euro V" standard, said the commission, the executive body of the European Union (EU).
"More stringent emission limits will pave the way for cleaner trucks and buses. This is good for the health of our citizens and the environment," said European Commission Vice President Gunter Verheugen, who is in charge of enterprise and industry affairs.
"Industry gets a clear perspective and the time to prepare to produce clean, high quality vehicles without endangering its competitiveness," he said.
The new standard will significantly contribute to a further improvement of air quality in the EU, said the commission. With its introduction, the EU standard will be similar to that of the United States.
The proposal is now in the hands of the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers for approval. The commission wants the "Euro VI" standard to enter into force in 2013. Source:Xinhua
