Slovenian President Danilo Tuerk formally took over office from his predecessor Janez Drnovsek on Sunday, according to reports from Slovenia's news agency STA.

Tuerk, 55, assumed the five-year presidency after the swearing-in ceremony held on Saturday in parliament.

To mark the handover, Tuerk, who is also the new supreme commander of the Slovenian Armed Force, inspected the guard of honor in front of the presidential palace.

The new president said he will take his closest co-workers to a press conference on Monday.

Tuerk, who spent most of his career in diplomacy, won 68 percent of the vote in the Nov. 11 run-off against former prime minister Lojze Peterle.

Slovenian presidential duties are largely ceremonial with most of the powers lying with the cabinet and parliament. However, Tuerk's longtime diplomatic experience is valuable, especially during Slovenia's six-month rotating EU presidency, which starts on Jan. 1.
