Thailand's general election on Sunday was an important "milestone" in the Southeastern Asian nation, the European Union (EU) said.
"The European Union considers the general election of Dec. 23 an important milestone on the road back to constitutional order in Thailand," Portugal, current holder of the EU presidency, said in a statement.
"This election reaffirms the commitment of the people of Thailand to democracy and their determination to decide their own future," it added.
"The European Union looks forward to strong and fruitful relations with a new, elected Royal Thai Government, in the spirit of the long-standing friendship between Thailand and the European Union," said the statement.
Initial tally results showed that the People Power Party (PPP), regarded as a nominee party for Thailand's coup-ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, won Sunday's general election, the first for the country after a 15-month rule by a military-appointed government.
PPP leader Samak Sundaravej said his party would like to invite other parties to join in a coalition government. Source: Xinhua
