Russia on Tuesday test-fired a new multiple-reentry intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk cosmodrome, Itar-Tass news agency reported.
The RS-24 missile was launched from the northern cosmodrome at 16:10 Moscow time (1310 GMT), spokesman for the Strategic Missile Forces Alexander Vovk was quoted as saying.
"The RS-24 will enlarge the Force's capacity for penetrating through missile defense systems. This rocket will replace the multiple warhead RS-18 and RS-20, which are growing obsolete," the forces' information service said last week.
The Strategic Missile Forces regularly launch missiles to test their performance and decide whether they can remain in service.
Also on Tuesday, a Russian nuclear submarine test launched from the Barents Sea an intercontinental ballistic missile that flew thousands of kilometers to hit its designated target in Russia's far-east Kura testing range in Kamchatka.
