The widow of a 46-year-old man, who was gunned down when chasing a bank robber, has received 120,000 Cypriot pounds (about 300,000 U.S. dollars) from the government in recognition of his valour.

Justice Minister Sophoclis Sophocleous described the deceased Iacovos Kyriacou as a "hero", saying the financial assistance was a "token of appreciation for Iacovos' act," local media reported on Tuesday.

The minister gave two 60,000-pound checks to Kyriacou's widow and two kids, one for covering the family's living expenses and the other for the children's education.

Kyriacou was inside a Bank of Cyprus branch in the southern city of Larnaca last May when he saw a masked man wielding a sawn-off shotgun.

Witnesses said Kyriacou chased the robber in his car and cornered him, who was on a stolen moped with some 7,000 pounds, ata nearby supermarket car park.

He was then shot in the stomach and died from loss of blood in hospital. His last words were reportedly "I have children. Please, don't let me die."

The robber, 27, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter and armed robbery, was sentenced to 26 years in prison.
