Polish Defense Minister Bogdan Klich said Friday that his country will increase its forces in Afghanistan to 1,600 soldiers following the killing of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Klich said the additional 400 troops would be deployed in Aprilor May 2008.
Bhutto, 54, was killed Thursday evening in a shooting and suicide bombing attack during her election rally at Liaquat Bagh park in Rawalpindi, some 30 km south of Islamabad.
Klich told the commercial TVN24 news channel that "the destabilization of the situation in Pakistan and the danger that this instability will expand in the region and to Afghanistan has forced us to reinforce our military contingent."
There are currently 1,200 Polish troops deployed in the 36,000-strong UN-mandated and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
