The Italian foreign ministry issued a warning to Italians on Friday to avoid traveling to Pakistan while those already there were told to stay in protected areas and remain in touch with Italy's local diplomatic missions.
The warning was issued after Thursday's assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
The ministry added that "the risk of terrorism, present throughout the country, could lead to indiscriminate attacks on civilian targets, especially in urban areas, airports and places where people assemble."
Following Thursday's attack, the ministry said "there are situations of high tension in numerous areas of Pakistan" while a "terrorism risk" exists in the main cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi.
The ministry also recalled how there has been an upsurge in terrorist attacks in northern Pakistan, especially in the Northwest Frontier Province.
