The Italian government extended on Friday by a year the term of Italy's military missions in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Kosovo.
The extension was contained in a decree that will be put to the Italian parliament at the end of January.
In the past, left wingers in Premier Romano Prodi's coalition have opposed such extensions.
Their calls for Italian troops to be pulled out of Afghanistan have grown stronger in the wake of recent violence.
