Much of drought-stricken southern Australia experienced its hottest year on record in 2007, the nation's weather bureau said yesterday.
The Bureau of Meteorology's annual climate statement said last year was Australia's sixth warmest on record.
But new records were set in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia - three of Australia's six states that cover much of southern part of the continent and account for most of the nation's population.
The report said the country's average maximum temperature for 2007 was 28.6 C - 0.73 C above the long-term average.
The average temperature for the year was 21.8 C - 0.61 C above normal.
"The standout year is 2005, which was Australia's warmest year on record, but essentially all the warm years that we've had have been in recent years," climate analysis spokesman David Jones told local radio.
