Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said Friday Australia is deeply concerned by the violence in Kenya.

"The Australian government has urged Kenyan political leaders to refrain from any action that may further incite violence and to work urgently to achieve a peaceful solution to the current tensions," Smith said in a statement.

"We have also underlined with Kenyan leaders and key African countries our support for international mediation offers, including by the African Union and the Commonwealth," he said.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade believes around 600 Australians are currently in Kenya, which is in political and ethnic unrest following last week's disputed elections.
