Slovenia, as the incumbent EU presidency, condemned on Friday the terrorist attack against military personnel and civilians in the Turkish town of Diyarbakir.

The presidency expressed "its sincere condolence to the families of the dead and wishes the wounded a swift recovery," said an official statement.

The presidency also expressed its full solidarity and support to the people of Turkey, said the statement.

A car bomb in Diyarbakir on Thursday killed five and injured over 60 people.

Slovenia assumed the rotating half-year presidency of the European Union on Jan. 1. Turkey began EU membership negotiations in 2005 but progress towards membership has been slow because of rows over EU member Cyprus and human rights.

In 2006, the European Union decided to suspend membership talks in eight out of 35 negotiating areas due to Turkey's refusal to open its ports to Cyprus. Cyprus split into the internationally-recognized Greek Cypriot government in the south and a breakaway Turkish enclave in the north following Turkey's invasion in 1974 in response to a Greek Cypriot coup.
