Georgia held an early presidential election Saturday, which was moved up from the second half of 2008.
The following are some facts and figures about the election and the Caucasus nation.
-- Voters: The Central Election Commission (CEC) says there are 3.3 million eligible voters of 4.7 million people in the country;
-- Polling stations: There are more than 3,500 polling stations in more than 70 electoral districts scattered around themountainous country and more than 40 polling cubes abroad;
-- Observers: The CEC has accredited some 3,000 foreign and domestic observers, including those from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe;
-- Media: The CEC has accredited more than 160 media organizations to cover the election;
-- Rules: A candidate must win 50 percent plus one vote to secure victory in the election. Otherwise, a run-off will be held between the top two candidates in the first round two weeks later.
There's no threshold for voter turnout in the election.
The CEC will publish regional results within 24 hours after polls close and the final results will be announced within eight days after the election day. Source:Xinhua
